Just Stop Oil sprayed orange paint on private planes at Stansted Airport

Eco-activists have entered the grounds of a London airport and poured orange paint over several private aircraft, AP News reports.

Essex Police said two women have been arrested in a private area of London Stansted Airport on suspicion of criminal damage and interfering with the use or operation of national infrastructure.

Environmental group Just Stop Oil posted a video showing someone breaking through a fence and then a woman using a fire extinguisher to spray orange paint on at least two private aircraft.

An airport spokesman said the incident happened three miles (5 kilometres) from the main terminal and police said there was no threat to the public.

The airfield, 30 miles (50 kilometres) northeast of central London, is the city’s third busiest airport and is frequently used by government officials and world leaders including US President Joe Biden.

Just Stop Oil reported that Taylor Swift’s plane was parked at the airfield, but Essex Police said the pop star’s plane was not at the airport. Swift is performing three concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium from Friday to Sunday.

The arrests come a day after two activists from the band were detained for spray-painting Stonehenge with orange paint.

Through their protests, supporters of Just Stop Oil are demanding that the UK government end the extraction and use of fossil fuels by 2030. To do this, eco-activists block oil terminals and paint over artworks in public galleries.
