On Wednesday evening, April 30, gunmen shot and killed a Kenyan Member of Parliament in Nairobi. Citizen TV reports that two attackers on motorcycles carried out the assault.
Charles Were, the MP for Kasipul constituency in western Kenya, was shot at around 7.30pm local time. The gunmen followed him on a motorbike. One of the attackers dismounted and approached Mr. Were. He then shot the MP at close range. His driver survived the incident but was left in shock. Shortly after the attack, emergency services rushed Mr. Were to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, doctors pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival.
Mr. Were was a member of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by Raila Odinga. Odinga, who challenged the 2022 election results, claimed the process was flawed. However, after the election, both Odinga and President William Ruto reached an agreement to work together and address Kenya’s pressing issues.
This shocking event has left many in the local community and the political sphere in deep mourning. Authorities have not yet revealed the attackers’ motives. Investigations are underway to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
