Kiir urges calm after looting Sudanese businesses

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called for calm following protests and incidents of looting targeting Sudanese-owned businesses in the country. Tensions have been rising, particularly in Juba, where angry crowds have damaged several businesses.

Kiir condemns violence against south sudanese nationals

In his address on Friday, President Kiir condemned the reported violence against South Sudanese nationals in Sudan, particularly in Al Gezira state. He expressed concern about the actions of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against innocent civilians, describing them as “unacceptable.”

“I understand your grief and anger over what has happened to our people in Wad Madani,” President Kiir said. “However, we must stay calm and avoid retaliation. Let us not allow our emotions to cloud our judgment.”

The president urged South Sudanese citizens to protect Sudanese businesses and properties. “As a hospitable people, it is our duty to support those who have fled the conflict in Sudan. Let us offer them the safety they need during these difficult times.”

Security forces respond to unrest

Earlier this week, disturbing videos emerged showing the deaths of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan. This has heightened concerns over the safety of those still stranded in the war-torn country.

In response to the looting in Juba, authorities swiftly deployed security forces to restore order. They acted to prevent further damage to Sudanese-owned businesses, which individuals had already targeted in several neighbourhoods.

The unrest follows protests condemning the alleged killings of South Sudanese civilians by SAF. President Kiir’s message calls for peace and unity as tensions remain high.
