North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday inspected the country’s artillery weapons system and attended test firing of such weapons.
North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA reported on Saturday that Kim inspected a technically updated version of a 240mm multiple rocket launcher and observed test firings of guided multiple rocket launchers produced at various national defence industry facilities.
“The updated multiple rocket launcher with high mobility and concentration of fire has an automatic fire combined control system and will be deployed to units of the Korean People’s Army as replacement equipment from 2024 to 2026.”
North Korea has maintained an accelerated pace of weapons use in recent months as it expands its military capabilities, while diplomacy with the United States and South Korea remains stalled.
Experts say North Korea’s goal is to eventually pressure the United States to accept the idea of North Korea as a nuclear power and make major economic and security concessions from a position of strength.
Last month, Kim inspected the test firing of 240mm multiple rocket launchers, where he said the 240mm multiple rocket launcher will “bring about a strategic change in strengthening the country’s military’s artillery capabilities.”
