Talks with the US at various levels only emphasise the unchanged hostile policy of Washington towards Pyongyang, Korean media reported on Saturday.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said during the opening of an arms exhibition in Pyongyang:
“In our negotiations with the United States, we went as far as possible, but the outcomes only reinforced the belief that the superpower is not interested in peaceful coexistence. Instead, it has demonstrated a constant, hostile, and aggressive policy, coupled with a consistent reliance on force.”
He also added:
“The current emergency situation on the Korean Peninsula is in no way the result of any misunderstanding on the other side.”
Kim Jong Un and US President-elect Donald Trump have held several high-profile meetings aimed at reducing tensions on the peninsula. Their second summit in Hanoi in 2019 on denuclearisation ended without an agreement, increasing scepticism about the viability of the talks. Despite previous optimism, the talks ultimately failed to produce a lasting result and North Korea continued to develop its nuclear and missile programmes.
Kim Jong Un’s remarks came amid rising tensions in the region. North Korea has conducted several missile tests in recent months, the US continues to impose sanctions, and international efforts to restart talks have largely stalled.
In November, Kim Jong Un said the North Korean Armed Forces need to be fully prepared due to tensions on the Korean Peninsula. He expressed concern over possible US and South Korean actions and emphasised the importance of training battalion formations.
Earlier, Kim Jong Un’s sister accused the US of wanting to use nuclear weapons against North Korea.
