The King celebrates his 76th birthday with the opening of two food centres designed to make better use of food that would otherwise be thrown away.
Charles treats the day as a normal working day and continues to fulfil his duties despite a difficult year in which both he and the Princess of Wales were diagnosed with cancer.
Last year, the monarch launched the Coronation Food initiative, which aims to help those in need of food while reducing the amount of excess food thrown away. On his birthday, the King will present two centres – one face-to-face and one virtually.
During the visit, His Majesty will tour the new facility, meet beneficiaries and representatives from food banks, schools and community groups.
There are 14 million people in the UK facing food shortages and food banks have warned of rising demand.
Charles, like his late mother Elizabeth II, has two birthdays: his actual birthday on November 14 and his official birthday, which falls on the second Saturday in June.
Since 1748, the monarch’s official birthday has been celebrated with a parade known as Trooping the Colour, which is usually held on the day of the king or queen’s actual birth.
