A curfew has been imposed in Los Angeles amid ongoing protests against the activities of immigration services, US media reported on Tuesday.
The restrictions took effect on Tuesday at 8 p.m. and will last until Wednesday morning. The curfew will cover one square mile in the city centre.
According to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, dozens of city infrastructure facilities have been damaged as a result of the protests.
Earlier, it was reported that 23 retail outlets in the city centre had been looted. The authorities have stepped up security measures amid a growing number of incidents.
The unrest in Los Angeles began on June 6 after a raid by federal agents against illegal immigrants, during which 44 people were detained. In response to the protests, US President Donald Trump sent National Guard troops to California. He said the military would remain in the state until the situation became safe.
California authorities opposed this approach. State Governor Gavin Newsom criticised the deployment of the military and announced his intention to take legal action. He stressed that the use of the army within the country was unacceptable.
The president, accused local authorities of underestimating the scale of the protests and failing to provide sufficient support to federal agencies. He also said that the presence of the National Guard had prevented serious damage. In addition, Trump questioned the governor’s competence and raised the possibility of his arrest.
