Large-scale strike in Germany led to transport collapse

The drivers of freight and passenger trains did not go to work this night, announcing a nationwide strike. At the same time, Germany is witnessing large-scale protests by farmers who are on the verge of bankruptcy due to Berlin’s ill-conceived policies.

Germany is on the verge of a large-scale transport collapse. Farmers are blocking motorways. The railway service has been interrupted due to a large-scale protest of workers in the industry. The drivers of freight and passenger trains are on strike. They are demanding a pay rise of almost 600 euros and a shorter working week. 80 per cent of long-distance trains did not leave the depot this night.

The union has been trying to negotiate better working conditions with employers for months, but talks have stalled. The strike has disrupted logistics across the country. It has now become more difficult to get food to the shops, leaving supermarket shelves empty. So supermarket owners have stuck stickers on empty shelves with the text: “Scholz and Zelensky ate all the vegetables”. In this way the entrepreneurs express their sympathy for the protesting farmers who are dissatisfied with the government’s policy.

According to a recent poll, 70 per cent of Germans believe the farmers’ strike is justified. But the police are prosecuting them for public incitement to crime and traffic offences.

However, it’s not just agriculture that has economic problems. Industrial production is also falling at a record pace. Bundestag deputy Sarah Wagenknecht is calling for an end to suicidal policies. The other day, she founded her own party, which favours the lifting of restrictions against Moscow and early negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
