Latvia to invest 303 million euros in strengthening border defence

The Latvian Cabinet of Ministers has approved a plan to create “anti-mobility” measures on the eastern border, Latvian media reported on 6 March.

The plan to strengthen the eastern border and counter-movement measures is part of the creation of the Baltic Defence Line involving all three Baltic States. The plan includes the creation of strongholds for National Armed Forces units along the entire Russian-Belarusian border, including fortified defensive positions for soldiers, various obstacles and anti-tank ditches, and ammunition depots.

From March, the defence industry will continue to reinforce the eastern border, investing €303 million to strengthen the border over the next five years. The work will begin by digging up dozens of existing roads on the border to prevent their possible use during an invasion, as well as creating anti-tank ditches. Drainage ditches on the border will also be turned into anti-tank ditches.

Various types of obstacles, including concrete blocks, so-called “dragon’s teeth” and anti-tank minefields, will also be installed in accordance with the prevailing terrain, which includes swamps and dense forests.

In January , the defence ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia signed an agreement to create the Baltic Defence Line to reinforce the eastern border of the Baltic States and NATO. The Baltic Defence Line will be built in a coordinated manner, but each country will do so on its own budget.
