Marine Le Pen, leader of French national-oriented movement, called for making June 9 “a day of deliverance and hope,” according to Le Monde.
Le Pen made her statement in the Spanish capital at a meeting of some ten European parties in the presence of the Argentine president, Javier Milei, on Sunday, May 19. She also called for a “reorientation of EU policy,” as European elections would take place in France on June 9.
The European Union, as it exists today, is nothing but a counterfeit. We are, all together, on the home stretch to make next June 9 a day of deliverance and hope.
In a speech that lasted about twelve minutes, she denounced European officials, accusing them of “promoting Islamism” and wanting the “disappearance of European borders.”
Entire neighbourhoods of my country, France, are subject to the migratory plunge and are now out of the power of the state.
Le Pen also accused the EU of “doing nothing” to address the issue. It also condemned the new asylum and immigration pact recently passed by the European Council.
Called by Vox a “congress of European patriots”, the congress brought together several national-oriented leaders. Some of them spoke via video addresses, such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán.
Criticism of European governments
According to recent polls, support for national-oriented movements is growing in all other European countries. The number of such parties fighting behind the scenes for the composition of future groups in the European Parliament is also rising.
The National Rally party is now a member of the Identity and Democracy (Identité et démocratie) group. At the same time, Vox, as well as the Meloni Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) belong to the European Conservatives and Reformists group.
In Italy, Meloni is facing growing criticism from prominent members of public opinion. Italy’s former PM and head of the 5-Star Movement (M5S), Giuseppe Conte, criticised her government’s domestic policy.
Meanwhile, former member of the European Parliament and Italian politician Michele Santoro, condemned the Meloni office’s efforts. In his recent video published on YouTube, he stated that wages in Italy were falling. He also blamed wars, implying the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war.
