Leaked video prompts Finnish PM to resign

An inappropriate dance video at a private party that surfaced last year sparked controversy leading up to the resignation of Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin in 2023, Fox News reported.

The video showed the former PM dancing and drinking with a group of friends, which some perceived as a habit of attending too many parties and festivals, which they believed was not befitting someone holding such a high position.

Despite the controversy, Marin defended her actions, claiming that her behaviour was normal for someone of her age.

I danced, sang and partied – perfectly legal things. And I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve seen or known of others [using drugs].

She continued to face negative reactions for her behaviour until 2023, culminating in her defeat in the Finnish parliamentary elections in April. Her party slipped to third place in the election, leading her to announce a few days later that she would step down as leader of the Social Democratic Party later in 2023.

Marin kept her promise and left parliament in September completely, announcing that she would become an adviser to Tony Blair’s Institute for Global Change.

She also signed a contract with talent agency Range Media Partners, which promised to help her navigate future media opportunities.

However, she was not the only political leader to cause controversy in 2023: several other examples of scandals and corruption highlighted a stressful year around the world.
