Linking the Ukrainian counter-offensive to the US election

Kyiv’s counter-offensive has stalled but not stopped so as not to harm US President Joe Biden’s election campaign. The defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces would tarnish Biden’s image, therefore a failure before holding the election was not an option, il Fatto Quotidiano reported.

The Wall Street Journal published an article on November 16 entitled “It’s Time to End Magical Thinking About Russia’s Defeat.” However, the Italian press cannot write something similar due to the close connection between politics and the media.

Such statements would indicate the ineffectiveness of Italian measures to send arms to Ukraine. The counter-offensive, which began on June 5, should have secured victory within a week, but there has been no significant success on the battlefield.

Having depleted the army and used up a large amount of NATO weapons, Volodymyr Zelensky now faces a difficult situation in Avdiivka. The Ukrainians were forced to move some artillery from Zaporizhzhia to Donetsk.

Avdiivka is important for many reasons: it is located 20 kilometres from Donetsk; it contains an industrial plant crucial to Mariupol’s steel industry, which can generate billions of dollars in profits; the railway passes through there, and the N20 Highway to Kharkiv is located nearby.

The Ukrainian army has already received all kinds of modern weapons, but this is not enough in today’s realities of warfare. Ukraine missed the moment when it could have achieved peace through negotiations on its own terms.
