Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lifted the curfew she had imposed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, which was first introduced in response to clashes with police and vandalism.
Bass said the curfew had been “successful in preventing and deterring crime” and had “protected shops, restaurants, businesses and residents from people engaging in vandalism.”
She also noted a decrease in arrests during the demonstrations, pointing to a “decrease in incidents of violence.”
Protests in LA
Mass protests sparked by the Trump administration’s immigration policy began in California on June 6. The demonstrations unfolded in Los Angeles after a series of raids in which immigration officials detained dozens of people.
During the protests, demonstrators threw stones at police cars, and law enforcement officers used flashbang grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
On June 7, Trump ordered National Guard troops to be sent to Los Angeles without an official request from state authorities. On June 9, California authorities announced their intention to sue the president to stop the deployment of the National Guard, saying Trump had violated the state’s sovereignty.
The protests in the US later spread to Texas, Kentucky and Georgia.
