Low vaccination rates in Czechia drive economic loss during flu season

The Czech Republic is facing significant economic losses due to its annual flu epidemic, with low vaccination rates exacerbating the situation, according to Euractiv.

Despite the availability of effective vaccines, only 7% of the general population and 20% of at-risk groups are vaccinated, far below the World Health Organisation’s recommended 75% coverage. This shortfall is leading to widespread illness, lost productivity, and increased strain on businesses, the healthcare system, and the national economy.

Tomáš Prouza, Vice President of the Czech Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the economic toll of flu-related illnesses, noting that respiratory diseases result in sick leave averaging more than 10 workdays.

According to our estimates, the negative economic impact in the Czech Republic amounts to several tens of billions of crowns annually, even though a significant portion of these losses could be prevented by vaccinating a larger share of the population.

An analysis by Value Outcomes/IQVIA suggests that achieving 75% vaccination coverage among the working-age population could save the national economy €840 million in lost productivity and nearly €240 million in wage compensation during sick leave.

Low vaccination rates contribute to higher absenteeism, forcing employers to deal with staff shortages and disrupted operations. The healthcare and social systems also face increased demand during flu season, further straining resources.

The Czech Health Ministry is working to increase flu vaccination rates through awareness campaigns and improved accessibility. Ministry spokesperson Ondřej Jakob reported a 5% year-on-year increase in vaccinations, attributing the progress to targeted efforts.

We are working closely with the business sector to offer vaccination as an employee benefit.

The Czech Chamber of Commerce advocates for employer-led vaccination programs, emphasising that a healthier workforce benefits both businesses and the broader economy.
