Macron aims to boost hunt for wolves in France

French President Emmanuel Macron plans to pass a law allowing the killing of wild wolves in the country so that farmers can protect their herds, French media reported on Friday.

“We will not allow wolves to enter areas where they pose a threat to our agriculture. And that means we must, as we modestly put it, get rid of their large numbers,” the head of state said.

Macron also responded to possible criticism of the initiative, saying that people “who make up the rules and don’t live with their animals in places where there are bears or wolves should go there for two nights.”

On December 3, 2024, the European Union downgraded the protection status of wolves after an attack on a pony belonging to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and allowed hunting from March 2025. The decision was made because of their “growing numbers and negative impact on livestock farming.”

The European Union is also considering changing the protection status of wolves. The decision to allow hunting from March, 2025 was taken due to the growing population and its negative impact on livestock farming.
