Macron visits Rome to repair strained ties with Meloni

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will host French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday for talks seen as an attempt to ease tensions between the two countries.

The Italian prime minister and French president will hold talks in Rome on key issues ahead of major international summits. The talks could be a step towards an intergovernmental summit between Paris and Rome, which has not been held for several years due to strained relations and disagreements between the leaders.

Tensions between Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron arose after the Italian prime minister said that after her refusal to send troops to Ukraine she was not included among the leaders who had been in contact with Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump. The French leader accused her of spreading “false information” and assured that the deployment of armed forces had not been discussed.

A representative of the Élysée Palace said that the meeting would focus on issues related to the situation in Ukraine, events in the Middle East, and the state of bilateral political and economic relations.

Earlier, Meloni held talks with US President Donald Trump on new rounds of negotiations on Ukraine.
