The head of the regional government of Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, Miguel Albuquerque stepped down after a motion of censure, Euractiv reported.
The motion tabled by the Chega Party (PfE) was unanimously supported by the opposition. This exceeded the 24 votes required for approval and led to the dissolution of the minority government. However, the PSD will remain in power until a new government is formed.
The proposal was based on a legal case against Albuquerque and four regional secretaries involved in corruption investigations in Madeira.
However, Albuquerque announced in early December that he intended to seek re-election despite the collapse of his government.
If the opposition brings down the government, we will demand elections and go to the elections to win.
In the last four elections in 2015, 2019, 2023, and 2024, his PSD party failed to secure 24 seats needed for an absolute majority.
