Malaysia and Australia formalised four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on 4 March in Melbourne during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Australia and participation in the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.
Two of the memoranda are new, namely: “Practical Arrangements on Cooperation in Science and Technology and their Application for the Implementation of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)” and “Cybersecurity and Critical Technologies”. The other two MoUs renewed are co-operation in the fields of sports and higher education.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted renewable energy, green technology, digital technology and food security as potential areas for further exploration by Malaysia and Australia, adding that education remained the top priority to seek closer co-operation. Anwar noted:
The four MoUs are of course a remarkable milestone in charting a more progressive future, and they underscore the substantive success and outcome of our meetings.
Anwar said some of Malaysia’s outstanding sportsmen are currently being trained in Australia. He claimed:
So, if they secure some achievements in the Olympics, we’ll give some credit to Australia.
