Malaysia calls on ASEAN to address Gaza crisis and uphold international law

Malaysia has called on ASEAN to adopt a stronger and more united stance on global issues, including the crisis in Gaza. The government says the regional bloc must uphold international law and support those affected by conflict.

Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said ASEAN should not stay silent. Instead, he believes it must use its collective voice to promote justice and legal solutions.

According to Hasan, ASEAN’s response to global challenges shapes its credibility. He urged the bloc to act consistently in defending principles such as human rights, equality, and the rule of law.

“ASEAN cannot afford to remain quiet,” he said. “We have a role in world affairs. It’s important we speak for the vulnerable and support lawful solutions.”

Turning to Gaza, he said the Israeli blockade had caused severe shortages and rising deaths. He added that the situation reflects double standards and a weakening respect for international law.

The meeting also focused on preparations for several major events. These include the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit, and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

Malaysia will host the 46th ASEAN Summit from 26 to 27 May at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
