Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim condemned the so-called China phobia among the US and some of its Western allies, according to CGTN.
Anwar expressed confusion over why his country should “pick a quarrel” with China, its largest trading partner, in response to US criticism of its ties with Beijing.
“Why must I be tied to one interest? I don’t buy into this strong prejudice against China, this China-phobia.”
The Prime Minister claimed to have told US Vice President Kamala Harris that Malaysia was a “small country struggling to survive in a complex world.”
I want to focus on what is best for us.
Anwar took office as Prime Minister of Malaysia in November 2022. Calling China an essential neighbour, Anwar stated that his government would prioritise strengthening relations with China in the areas of trade, investment, and culture.
