Man charged with arson after fire at former East London synagogue

A 45-year-old man has appeared in court charged with arson following a blaze at a disused synagogue in east London that police say could have endangered lives.

Moses Edwards, of Wanstead, has been accused of setting fire to the premises of the former East London Synagogue on May 5. He is due before Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 5:16 a.m. local time, with officers from the Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade attending. Only the gates and a lock at the entrance to the building were damaged in the incident. No injuries have been reported.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the former synagogue is currently on the market and is owned by a local Somali Muslim organisation.
