A man has died after a shark attack off the coast of Queensland in north-eastern Australia, police said. The incident happened on Sunday near the Cassowary Coast.
Emergency services responded to a boat ramp on the Cassowary Coast shortly before midday.
The victim, a 39-year-old man, had been swimming near a nearby shoal when the attack occurred.
Authorities retrieved him from the water. However, he died from his injuries at the scene.
Queensland Police Service confirmed the death in a statement.
They described the case as a “sudden and non-suspicious death” and said they will prepare a report for the coroner.
Officials did not release the victim’s identity or full details of his injuries.
This marks the second deadly shark attack in Australia within two weeks.
Previously, a 38-year-old man died while spearfishing near Perth.
That incident also involved severe leg injuries, and emergency crews could not revive him.
Shark encounters occur regularly around Australia. However, fatal attacks remain rare.
According to national incident data, several shark encounters were recorded earlier this year, with only one resulting in death.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to monitor popular beaches and swimming areas with protective measures.
