Mark Carney sworn in as Canada’s Prime Minister

Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s Prime Minister on March 14, replacing Justin Trudeau. Immediately after taking office, Carney expressed his readiness to collaborate with US President Donald Trump, despite concerns over tariffs that could hurt the Canadian economy.

A fresh approach to US relations

Carney, 59, made it clear that his approach would differ from Trudeau’s, who had a challenging relationship with Trump. After the ceremony, he told reporters that while he respects Trump, both leaders can find common ground to benefit their countries. “We understand President Trump’s priorities and can work together for mutual solutions,” he said.

He dismissed the suggestion of Canada being annexed by the US, calling it “crazy.” Carney also reshuffled his Cabinet, focusing on improving relations with Washington. He reduced the number of ministerial positions, with key changes in finance, trade, and foreign affairs.

Carney political rise and what’s next

Carney’s appointment marks an impressive rise for a man with no prior political experience. As the former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, he gained recognition for his crisis management skills. During the leadership race, he argued that his background made him the right person to handle relations with Trump.

Carney won the leadership race on March 9, replacing Trudeau, who had served for over nine years. Next week, Carney plans to visit London and Paris to strengthen Canada’s ties with Europe. Meanwhile, his government might face a snap election in the next two weeks. Opinion polls suggest a tight race with the Conservatives, and opposition parties are prepared to challenge the minority government if a confidence vote happens by the end of March.
