Mark Zuckerberg became the world’s second-richest man for the first time Thursday, surpassing Jeff Bezos, as shares of Meta Platforms Inc. continue to rise.
Zuckerberg’s bet on the meta universe, which initially looked very unsuccessful, has paid off in recent months, bringing his fortune to the $206.2 billion mark, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The title “super-rich” is now held by four people in the world. That’s an absolute in the history of financial observation. The list of billionaires who have also surpassed this luxury threshold includes Elon Musk (Tesla, X, SpaceX, $259.6 billion), Larry Ellison (ex-Oracle, $203.8 billion) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon, $200.9 billion). As one can see from the list, so Zuckerberg is the second in the ranking of the richest people on the planet as of October 2024.
But the head of luxury holding LVMH and the main mogul in fashion, Bernard Arnault, noticeably lost part of the state and position in the list. Now he occupies only the fifth place with an estimated fortune of $185.6 billion.
A few days ago, at the Meta Connect 2024 event, Zuckerberg unveiled to the public a gadget he calls “the next big platform after the smartphone.” It is the Orion holographic augmented reality glasses.
The device is the result of ten years of research and development, the aim of the project is to miniaturise computing components to project a holographic image on top of a real picture. For example, at the presentation, such glasses quickly help the owner to find his car in the car park – the gadget quickly highlights it and illuminates it “in the eyes” of the driver. Ray-Ban, one of the largest eyewear manufacturers, became a fashion partner of the innovation.
