London’s Metropolitan Police are expanding a high-stakes investigation into the ties between former UK ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, with senior political figures now potentially facing questioning.
A significant investigation is unfolding in London concerning former UK ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson and his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. British police are preparing to question high-ranking officials and politicians who may be linked to the case.
The Metropolitan Police, widely known as Scotland Yard, are actively broadening the scope of their inquiry. In the coming weeks, officers may begin interviewing both current and former senior officials as witnesses. The move is considered highly sensitive, given that prominent figures in British politics could be involved.
Among those who may be called is the prime minister, Keir Starmer, who appointed Mandelson to the ambassadorial role. Also potentially in line for questioning is Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s former chief of staff, who approved the appointment. McSweeney has since resigned amid the growing controversy.
Police may additionally seek to interview former prime minister Gordon Brown, under whose government Mandelson served as business secretary during the period when the alleged links to Epstein occurred. In 2009, Mandelson forwarded an internal UK cabinet document to Epstein, an action that later triggered a criminal investigation.
Earlier this March, the UK government released the first tranche of documents related to the Mandelson case, following his resignation in 2025 over his ties to Epstein. The files include details surrounding his 2024 ambassadorial appointment, including security vetting procedures. The scandal continues to gather momentum as police work to establish the full extent of the connections involved.
