Mexico rejects Trump’s US troop proposal

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected US President Donald Trump’s suggestion to send American troops into Mexico to fight drug trafficking.

This came to light after Sheinbaum spoke to supporters in eastern Mexico. The Wall Street Journal reported on a recent phone call between the two leaders, during which Trump pushed for more US military involvement in tackling Mexican drug cartels.

Sheinbaum responded firmly to the proposal, making it clear she was against it.

Sheinbaum reaffirms Mexico’s sovereignty

During her speech, the president recalled Trump’s suggestion: “How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the United States military come in and assist you.”

Her reply was direct and unwavering: “No.”

She went on to highlight the importance of national independence, stating, “Sovereignty is not for sale. It is something we cherish and defend.”

White house responds

Following Sheinbaum’s comments, James Hewitt, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, highlighted Trump’s cooperation with Mexico’s government. He emphasised efforts to secure the southwest border, calling it “the most secure in history.”

Despite this, Hewitt pointed out that foreign terrorist organisations continue to pose a threat. Trump, he added, expects Mexico to do more to address criminal gangs and cartels. At the same time, the US remains prepared to assist and enhance collaboration.

US military presence rises along Mexico border

The presence of US military forces along the southern border with Mexico has increased in recent months. This follows Trump’s January directive to expand the military’s role in managing migrant flows.

Additionally, the US Northern Command has deployed more troops and resources to the border. There has been an increase in surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl trafficking. Furthermore, the US is seeking expanded powers for Special Forces to collaborate more closely with Mexican forces in the fight against cartels.
