Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that his administration would push for all non-Mexican migrants deported from the US to be returned directly to their countries of origin, rather than being sent back to Mexico after crossing the border illegally.
During his Wednesday morning briefing, López Obrador addressed an executive order issued by US President Joe Biden that effectively banned undocumented migrants from receiving asylum.
We are looking for them to reach an agreement so that if they decide to deport, they can do it directly, and we are helping them to reach that agreement. Why are they coming to Mexico?
The order takes effect when an average of 2,500 or more “border encounters” per day occurs in a seven-day period. This includes the southwestern land border and the southern coastal borders of the United States. Its restrictions remain in effect for a fortnight until “border encounters” fall below 1,500.
We have no problems. We treat migrants very well. We treat everyone very well, but why triangulate? Why not a direct agreement? In any case, we cooperate and help President Biden.
By sending asylum seekers beyond the southern border, the US relied on the Mexican government to accept all deported migrants, regardless of their country of origin. However, Trump’s anti-immigration policies have left millions of non-Mexican migrants stranded in Mexico.
Between March 2020 and the end of 2022, more than 2 million migrants were deported to Mexico under Title 42, with more than 1.3 million of them coming from Central America.
López Obrador, who will step down in October, is currently overseeing the next phase of US-Mexico relations. At the same time, the relentless flow of migrants will be a constant challenge for the incoming administration of newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum.
They are enforcing a policy that does not correspond to the new reality.
American politicians used “the immigration issue for electoral, political purposes,” López Obrador added.
They take advantage and sometimes even make money by maintaining stances that instead of helping to solve problems complicate them.
