Moldova sets date for crucial parliamentary election

The Moldovan parliament has officially approved the date of the upcoming parliamentary elections: they will be held on September 28, 2025. The decision was taken at a legislative session on Thursday, an important step in the preparations for one of the country’s key political events this year.

The elections will determine the new composition of the parliament, which will shape Moldova’s political course for the next four years. Political analysts predict an intense struggle, especially against the backdrop of current challenges: economic instability, rising energy prices and EU integration issues.

According to Moldovan law, the election campaign will officially start 60 days before the elections, i.e. at the end of July. However, already now the parties are intensifying their work.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), some 2.8 million eligible citizens will be able to vote, including the diaspora, whose voting traditionally plays an important role.

Representatives of the parliament’s Communist and Socialist bloc opposed the September election date, insisting that it be held at the end of July. They explained their demand by the citizens’ desire to “get rid of this government.”

In Moldova, parliamentary elections are held every four years. The previous parliamentary elections were held on July 11, 2021.
