Monsoon rains kill at least 30 in Northeast India

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered deadly floods and landslides in India’s northeastern states, killing at least 30 people, according to local officials and media.

Deaths across multiple states

Assam reported eight deaths, while Arunachal Pradesh confirmed nine. Many victims were trapped under debris following landslides caused by continuous rainfall. In Guwahati, a mudslide killed three members of one family. Flooding disrupted power supply in several parts of the city, leading officials to shut schools and colleges on Saturday.

To prevent electrocution, officials cut electricity in high-risk areas, said Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Other states also reported casualties. Mizoram confirmed five deaths in a landslide. Six people died in Meghalaya. Authorities in Nagaland and Tripura reported two more deaths.

Emergency response and evacuations

Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, urged emergency teams to remain alert, especially in areas prone to landslides or flooding.

In Manipur, the Indian Army carried out large-scale evacuations. They moved hundreds to safer places and distributed food, water, and essential medicines.

Ongoing rainfall and widespread flooding

Rain has continued for three straight days. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert in several northeastern districts, warning of more heavy rainfall.

Many rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have overflowed. The flooding has submerged large areas and cut off access to some communities.

Monsoon rains, which run from June to September, are vital for farming. However, they often damage infrastructure and claim lives. Dozens of deaths occur each year due to poor drainage, landslides, and weak construction.

Last month, Mumbai saw its earliest monsoon rains in over two decades, arriving nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

Scientists say climate change is affecting weather patterns in South Asia. But its exact impact on the monsoon system remains unclear.
