Montenegro ready for EU membership – Hungarian FM

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó declared on Thursday that Montenegro was ready to become a member of the European Union.

The Hungarian government’s stance is clear: Montenegro is ready for EU membership.

Szijjártó announced that after a meeting with his counterpart Filip Ivanović in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica. Speaking at a joint press conference, the Hungarian diplomat emphasised the need for new energy and dynamism from outside as the EU faced economic and security challenges.

“We believe that this new energy can come from the Western Balkans and assertive countries that are ready for such co-operation.”

Ivanović claimed that Montenegro attached great importance to Hungary’s support for its EU membership.

Determination and the commitment to constructive dialogue resulted in the establishment and maintenance of political stability in the country.

After declaring independence in 2006, Montenegro formally applied for EU membership on 15 December, 2008, and was granted “candidate country” status on 17 December, 2010. It launched accession talks on 29 June, 2012, and might become the next member of the EU.

The country signed its first official document with NATO, the Partnership for Peace Framework Document, on 14 December, 2006, and became NATO’s 29th member on 5 June, 2017.
