More than 50 Mediterranean migrants rescued after boat crash

Dozens of migrants aboard a boat in distress in the central Mediterranean Sea were rescued on Tuesday 5 March in an operation by the non-governmental organisation Sea-Watch, Independent reports.

The migrants, many suffering from dehydration and fuel burns, were rescued by Sea-Watch 5 crew from a wooden boat tilted on one side. One of them died on board the rescue vessel.

Italy ordered the Sea-Watch 5 vessel to head to the port of Ravenna to disembark the rescued, which is more than 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) from where the migrants were picked up.

Italy has ordered an NGO to go to the port of Ravenna to disembark the rescued people, more than a thousand kilometres from where the migrants were rescued.

The death of the 17-year-old has sparked controversy in Italy as local media reported that help from the coastguard arrived late. The Sea-Watch ship is due to dock at the Porto Corsini terminal on the morning of 11 March.
