At least five people were wounded in a stabbing incident in central Amsterdam on Friday, according to local authorities.
The attack took place on a busy shopping street in the southern part of Dam Square, a major tourist and commercial hub.
A knife-wielding individual stabbed multiple victims before being subdued by a civilian and arrested by police, according to police spokesperson Eline Roovers.
The suspect was detained with the help of a civilian.
The assailant was also injured during the confrontation. Emergency services, including multiple ambulances and a trauma helicopter, rushed to the scene. The area was cordoned off as authorities conducted their investigation.
All five victims sustained serious wounds and were transported to nearby hospitals. Their current conditions remain undisclosed.
The attack also disrupted a city council meeting attended by Mayor Femke Halsema, highlighting growing concerns over public safety.
Amsterdam has seen a rise in stabbing incidents linked to mental health crises. Last year, a fatal stabbing prompted the city to launch a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerning behaviour.
