Musk threatens new “America Party” and primary challenges over Trump spending bill

Elon Musk declared on Monday he would establish a third political party dubbed the “America Party” immediately upon passage of US President Donald Trump’s contentious domestic policy legislation.

If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.

On his social media platform X, Musk framed the move as necessary to counter a “Democrat-Republican uniparty.”

“Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

The threat accompanied Musk’s renewed criticism of the “big, beautiful bill,” which he labelled “insane” for its record $5 trillion debt ceiling increase. He specifically targeted Republican lawmakers who supported the legislation despite campaigning on fiscal restraint:

Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.

Musk’s pledge to unseat incumbents focuses particularly on the House Freedom Caucus, whose members he accused of hypocrisy. Tagging Representatives Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas), he demanded:

“How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a DEBT SLAVERY bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?”

Harris had voted “present” on the House bill in May, arguing it needed further deficit reduction, a justification Musk dismissed. With Musk having spent $290 million supporting Republicans in 2024, his threats carry financial weight, especially for House members facing 2026 primaries.

The billionaire’s opposition reignites a public feud with Trump that began in June when Musk, formerly head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), denounced the bill as a “disgusting abomination” undermining his cost-cutting efforts.

Though Musk later deleted some critical posts and Trump called him a “wonderful guy,” tensions flared anew as Senate voting progressed.

With the Senate aiming to pass the bill by 4 July, Musk’s ultimatum now looms as a destabilising force within the GOP. His vision for an “America Party” remains undefined but signals a potent challenge to bipartisan spending consensus.
