NATO aims for secure Indo-Pacific region, Ukraine gives up hope of alliance membership

NATO is keen on creating a secure Indo-Pacific region, US Ambassador to New Delhi Eric Garcetti told The Hindu.

Asked whether NATO had formally asked to set up a presence in India, Mr. Garcetti said, “There is no NATO presence in India, and I’m not aware of a request for one.”

However, he said, NATO members have an interest, like the rest of the world, in ensuring a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region. Mr. Garcetti noted that many NATO members are strong defence partners to India. He also stated:

For example, India conducts more military exercises with the United States than with any other country. It is in our global interest to see that the Indo-Pacific remains secure and that India is a leader in the region.

Ukraine realises it will not be accepted into NATO – Polish Minister

While the US is thinking of a military move into the Indo-Pacific region, Ukrainian authorities realise that a country that is in a state of military conflict cannot become a NATO member, Polish Interior and Administration Minister Tomasz Siemoniak told Polish Radio.

According to him, the Ukrainian side may be shown the prospect of membership in the alliance at the next NATO summit in Washington. He added that the documents and declarations themselves would not protect Ukraine.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hopes that Ukraine will join NATO in the next ten years. In an interview with DPA, he called for increased military assistance to Kyiv.

The alliance secretary general told the DPA:

I hope very much that Ukraine will become an ally.

Stoltenberg also stressed that he expected the countries of the military bloc to boost support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in the near future. According to him, an increase in military supplies will allegedly speed up the end of the conflict.
