At the end of summer 2026, a deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across much of the planet. Astronomers say earth’s shadow will cover about 96% of the moon at its peak, while astrology enthusiasts believe the event could herald major life changes.
A “nearly total” eclipse in the night sky
The eclipse will take place on the night of August 27–28, from Thursday into Friday. Although it is officially classified as a partial lunar eclipse, it will look strikingly close to a total one.
At maximum phase, earth’s shadow will cover roughly 96% of the lunar disc. From some locations, the eclipse may even appear total. But astronomers caution that it will not be a true “blood moon”: instead of turning vivid scarlet, the lunar surface is expected to take on a copper-red, rust-like hue.
How long will it last?
The entire event will last 5 hours and 38 minutes. The partial phase alone will run for 3 hours and 18 minutes, with maximum eclipse occurring at 04:13 UTC on August 28.
Because the alignment of the sun, earth and moon will not be perfect, only part of the moon will enter the umbra — the darkest, densest part of earth’s shadow. According to the Galileo Galilei Planetarium, 93% of the moon’s diameter will be covered, making this an unusually deep partial eclipse.
Best places to watch
North and South America will offer the best viewing conditions. In parts of Europe and Asia, the eclipse will be only partially visible, with the moon appearing low on the horizon, close to moonset.
No special equipment is needed to observe a lunar eclipse. Unlike solar eclipses, it is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. For a closer view, binoculars or a small telescope are recommended — but the main requirement is simply that the Moon is above the horizon in your region at the right time.
