New cars sales in EU dropped in February

Sales of new cars in the European Union fell 3.4 per cent year-on-year to 853,670 units in February, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show.

“The year-on-year decline in February 2025 was 3.4 per cent,” ACEA wrote. Among the major markets, declines were mostly seen, with Germany down 6.4 per cent, Italy down 6.2 per cent and France down 0.7 per cent; Spain saw an 11 per cent increase.

January-February saw a 3% decline to 1.686 million cars, including a 6% decline in Italy, 4.6% in Germany, 3.3% in France, and an 8.4% increase in Spain over the two months.

In model terms, according to the association, sales in Europe of new Volkswagen Group cars in February rose 4.9% year-on-year, Stellantis fell 16.4%, Renault Group – increased 11.3%. Sales of Tesla electric cars in the EU almost halved to 11,743 units in February. In January-February, Volkswagen sales rose 4.8 per cent, Stellantis sales fell 17.1 per cent, Renault sales rose 8.3 per cent and Tesla sales also halved to 19,046 cars.

Sales of petrol cars fell 22.4% in February to 244,073 cars, diesel cars fell 28.8% to 80,569 cars, battery cars rose 23.7% to 131,275 cars, plug-in hybrid cars fell 1.4% to 63,570 cars, hybrid electric cars rose 19% to 304,062 cars and the rest were broadly unchanged at 30,121 cars.

In January-February, sales of petrol cars fell 20.5% to 489,838 cars, diesel cars fell 28% to 163,452 cars, battery cars rose 28.4% to 255,489 cars, plug-in hybrid cars fell 5% to 124,947 cars, hybrid electric cars rose 18.7% to 594,059 cars and the rest fell 8.5% to 57,855 cars.
