New French government announced

The new government of French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, which took office on Thursday, announced the rearrangement of some ministers.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the interior, finance, defence and justice ministers remain in place. The composition of the government was agreed by Attal, 34, France’s youngest prime minister in history, and the country’s president.

Stéphane Séjourné, 38, head of the Renaissance party and leader of the Renew Europe group of lawmakers in the European Parliament, replaced Catherine Colonna as French foreign minister.

Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra retains her post less than six months ahead of the Paris Olympics and also gets a portfolio in education, a position previously held by Attal.

The Ministry of Culture is being taken over by 58-year-old Rachida Dati, Minister of Justice under former president Nicolas Sarkozy. Prisca Thevenot, 38, formerly a junior minister for youth, has been appointed as the new government spokesperson.

Asked about his young age, as some critics point to his relative lack of experience, Attal declared:

I love my country; I want to meet the expectations of my fellow citizens … and solve problems. Of course, it’s difficult. … I feel ready to do it. What I want is: action, action, action. Results, results, results.
