Next round of US-Iran nuclear talks set for Rome on Saturday

The second round of consultations between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme is scheduled to be held in Rome on Saturday, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported on X.

“The second round of talks on the nuclear deal between the US and Iran is expected to take place in Rome on Saturday, three sources told me,” he wrote.

US President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, last month sent a letter to Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling for direct nuclear talks with Iran. Iran responded to the letter through Oman.

Iran and the US held indirect talks in Oman on April 12. Later, both the Iranian and US sides said the talks were “positive and constructive.”

The two sides announced that they would meet again on April 19. US media reported that the second round of talks would be held in the Italian capital Rome, but the Iranian side said consultations had resulted in a decision to hold the talks again in Oman.

Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, told Fox News Channel that under the previous nuclear deal, the sides had agreed to enrich Iran’s uranium to 3.67. Witkoff also said Iran should stop enriching uranium.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by saying Iran was ready to address concerns about its nuclear programme but would not discuss its right to enrich uranium.
