No war with Azerbaijan, Armenian PM says

Armenia is “on the path to freedom, democracy and peace,” and the region has earned the right to live in peace and prosperity, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an address to his compatriots on 9 May.

There will be no war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, “despite all internal and external provocations,” the draft peace treaty between the countries has been agreed and is awaiting signature, Pashinyan said.

“Our region has earned the right to live in peace and prosperity, and that is how it should be,” he stressed, adding that Armenia is “on the path of freedom, democracy and peace.” This requires courage, honesty, complete self-knowledge, the ability to read and study one’s own history, as well as “the messages it sends,” the Armenian PM also added.

According to the prime minister, the ideology of the “real Armenia” is the result of reading messages from “historic Armenia,” which says: “Do not follow my path, but focus on building freedom, happiness and prosperity in the country of our dreams.”

The 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II reminds us of the danger of Nazism, fascism, totalitarianism and all their manifestations, which contradict the freedom and happiness of the individual, the people and the state, since their main goal is domination, incitement to war and restriction of freedoms, Pashinyan said. He congratulated his compatriots who fought in the ranks of the Soviet Army, the armies of the Western Allies and underground resistance groups.

Pashinyan and more than twenty other foreign leaders arrived in Moscow for a parade marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II. A visit by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was also expected, but it was cancelled. Baku explained this by the head of state’s participation in events dedicated to his father, Heydar Aliyev.

Yerevan and Baku reached a peace agreement in March. In a 17-article document, the parties recognise each other’s territorial integrity and inviolability of borders and, on this basis, will carry out the delimitation and demarcation of their borders, establish diplomatic relations, confirm the non-deployment of third-country forces along the border and the mutual withdrawal of claims from international courts, as well as refrain from filing claims on disputed issues that existed prior to the signing of the agreement.
