North Korea sent about fifty trash balloons towards South Korea on Sunday morning, continuing launches for five consecutive days.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the latest launch came just hours after Pyongyang sent about 200 trash-filled balloons towards South Korea late Saturday night.
Around 50 trash balloons were confirmed to have landed in Seoul and the northern region of Gyeonggi Province. Containing mostly scrap paper, pieces of plastic and plastic bottles, no hazardous materials have been found, the JCS added, warning the public to watch for falling debris and avoid direct contact with any balls found.
Pyongyang has sent over 1,000 debris balloons towards South Korea for five consecutive days, resuming the launch of debris balloons after a month-long hiatus, according to the JCS data released on Sunday.
North Korea stopped launching trash balloons to South Korea for nearly four weeks after 10 August, it resumed launching rubbish balloons from the night of 4 September.
Since 28 May, North Korea has launched thousands of trash balloons in response to leaflets sent across the border by North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea. In response, the South Korean military has been broadcasting daily anti-North Korean broadcasts over loudspeakers on the border since 21 July.
