North Korea discusses economic co-operation with Russia

A senior North Korean official held talks with the governor of Russia’s Primorsky Krai, Pyongyang’s state media reported Wednesday, amid speculation that North Korea is seeking to send workers to Russia, Yonhap News Agency reports.

North Korean Foreign Economic Relations Minister Yun Jong-ho and Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Russia’s region on the border with North Korea, discussed further strengthening high-level regional economic cooperation in Pyongyang on Tuesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

Ahead of his visit, Kozhemyako told a Russian media outlet that the topic of the meeting would be ways to boost cooperation in tourism, trade and agriculture.

The National Intelligence Service, South Korea’s spy agency, said Tuesday it had detected signs that North Korea was seeking to send workers to Russia and was closely monitoring the situation.

Kozhemyako arrived in North Korea on Monday as the two countries seek to strengthen their ties following a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in September.
