North Korea to open tourist site for foreign visitors

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has opened a new coastal tourist zone on the Kalma Peninsula in the city of Wonsan, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The complex will begin operating on July 1 and will be able to accommodate up to 20,000 guests at a time. The construction of the new tourist resort was carried out under the personal supervision of Kim Jong Un.

“The new zone should play a leading role in shaping tourist culture and provide visitors with the best conditions for a fulfilling and enjoyable holiday,” Kim Jong Un said at the ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by Kim Jong Un’s wife, Ri Sol-ju, and their daughter, Choe Hyon, marking the first time the first lady has appeared in public in a year and a half.

Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora also attended the ceremony. The resort was built as part of a programme to create world-class cultural and tourist zones.

The complex includes hotels, a water park, sports grounds, cultural centres, as well as shopping and entertainment facilities. Construction was carried out under the personal supervision of the DPRK leader. The new resort is intended to become a model for national tourism and the first step towards the development of the industry in the country.
