Northern Australia prepares to face Tropical Cyclone Lincoln

Northern Australia is expecting strong winds and heavy rain after a cyclone crossed the coast for the third time this summer.

Tropical Cyclone Lincoln crossed the coast as a Category 1 system on Friday afternoon between the Northern Territory-Queensland border and Port McArthur in the territory.

The system is expected to move west of the Northern Territory over the weekend and bring heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding, and is expected to move westwards across the Northern Territory and towards the Kimberley region of Western Australia over the coming days.

Strong winds of 50 to 100 kilometres per hour are expected. Heavy rain is forecast for eastern Carpentaria and north-eastern Barkley with the potential for flash flooding.

“Locations which may be affected include Tennant Creek, Elliott, Borroloola, McArthur River, Wollogorang and Renner Springs,” the Bureau of Meteorology said. and added that up to 250mm of rain could fall overnight.

The warnings came as Tropical Cyclone Jasper brought record rainfall and severe flooding to far north Queensland over Christmas.
