Norway seeks closer European defence ties

Norway unveiled its first national security strategy, outlining plans to deepen defence collaboration with European partners as it braces for potential “crisis” and “war” in an increasingly unstable geopolitical climate, according to Euractiv.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre presented the 18-page strategy on Thursday, emphasising the need to bolster the “resilience of Norwegian society” against potential threats.

While reaffirming Norway’s reliance on NATO and US military support, the document highlights “considerable uncertainty” over America’s long-term commitment to Europe. It warns that “new American priorities” could weaken traditional alliances, leaving Norway exposed.

Despite its non-EU membership, Norway is pursuing tighter integration with Brussels’ defence initiatives. A 2024 security pact with the EU grants Oslo access to the bloc’s proposed €150 billion joint borrowing scheme for military procurement, aimed at reducing reliance on US technology.

The strategy also prioritises bilateral partnerships with the UK, Germany, France, and Poland, alongside investments in domestic defence capabilities and economic security.

Though Norway remains strategically tethered to NATO, Støre’s administration appears to hedge against a future where US support is no longer guaranteed.
