Norway’s government collapses over EU energy regulation dispute

The Centre Party decided to leave the Norwegian government after a political standoff over the adoption of EU energy laws, according to local media.

Following weeks of political turmoil, the party announced that it was leaving Norway‘s coalition government with the Labour Party. Marit Arnstadt, leader of the Centre Party, stated that the move was due to “political matters, and we do not want to align ourselves more closely with the EU’s energy policy.”

As a member of the European Economic Area, Norway is obliged to accept EU energy laws. The Labour Party has been pushing for the adoption of 2019 EU energy efficiency and renewables legislation, but the Centre Party has opposed the move.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre is expected to speak at a press conference on the collapse of the country’s government.
