Norway’s PM set for crucial talks with Trump on NATO, trade and Ukraine

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg will meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, with high-stakes discussions expected to focus on NATO security, the Ukraine war, and bilateral trade relations, according to Reuters.

The talks come at a pivotal moment for transatlantic relations, with Norway seeking to strengthen NATO cooperation in the Arctic region and address trade tensions following Trump’s imposition of a 15% tariff on Norwegian imports, later temporarily reduced to 10%.

The discussions will also cover coordination of support for Ukraine, where Norway has been a major contributor of military and humanitarian aid.

Støre emphasised the importance of the US partnership.

Norway and the US cooperate in a number of areas, and the US is an important trading partner for Norway. I look forward to talking about areas where we can cooperate even more closely in the future.

As one of the few European leaders to secure face time with Trump post-2024 election, Støre’s visit could set the tone for US-Nordic relations. With former NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg accompanying him, the delegation signals Norway’s strategic role in Arctic defence.
