Kim Jong-un has reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to strengthening its nuclear capabilities. He blamed the United States for regional and global conflicts, according to state media reports on Sunday.
During a visit to the Ministry of National Defence on Saturday, marking the 77th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army, Kim outlined new plans to accelerate North Korea’s deterrent capabilities. While he didn’t provide details, he stressed the importance of strengthening nuclear forces.
Kim said the U.S. nuclear presence and joint military exercises with allies cause military imbalances in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula. He also mentioned the U.S.-led trilateral alliance with South Korea and Japan, along with the formation of an Asian NATO, as contributing to tensions.
Kim Jong-un’s vision for nuclear strength and regional peace
Kim argued that North Korea does not want unnecessary regional tension but will take measures to maintain military balance. His country seeks to prevent war and ensure peace on the Korean Peninsula.
He criticised the U.S. for its role in global conflicts. Kim claimed Washington’s involvement in such disputes shows that North Korea’s defence strategy is justified. He also held the U.S. responsible for prolonging the war in Ukraine, accusing it of trying to weaken Russia.
Kim stated that North Korea would continue supporting Russia’s sovereignty and security, in line with their strategic partnership.
Training and military preparedness for modern warfare
Kim declared this year “the year of training.” He emphasised improving war readiness to meet modern warfare demands. He also stressed the need for stricter military discipline within North Korea’s armed forces.
There are concerns that North Korea may use this training year as a pretext for military provocations. Kim’s visit to the Ministry of National Defence included key military officials, such as Minister No Kwang-chol and Chief of General Staff Ri Yong-gil.
North Korea has made clear that its nuclear weapons are not for negotiation. According to KCNA, the weapons are meant to deter any invasion attempts and protect the country’s sovereignty and regional peace.
