The number of refugees living in Germany reached a new high of 3.48 million, some 60,000 more than at the end of 2023 and the highest level recorded since the 1950s, German media said.
Currently, there are more refugees in Germany than ever before. The German newspaper Neue OsnabrĂĽcker Zeitung reports, citing a response from the Federal Government, that by the end of the first half of 2024, there were around 3.48 million refugees. Alice Weidel, chairwoman of the anti-immigrant AfD party faction in the Bundestag, which performed at an all-time high in the last election, said:
“The highest level since the 1950s”? The refugees and displaced persons of the post-war period were German compatriots. The import of millions of asylum seekers from all over the world represents an unprecedented transformation of the population. We must put an end to this cynical experiment!
The report took into account all people, regardless of residence permit, who are currently seeking protection in Germany for humanitarian reasons. Of the 3.48 million refugees, around 1.18 million were Ukrainian refugees only.
Apart from, the number of people forced to leave the country in Germany is decreasing due to deportations and departures, the report said. Therefore, in the middle of 2024 statistics recorded the need to leave the country 226 882 people, which is 15 760 less than at the end of 2023. Earlier, Berlin announced wide-ranging measures after a series of deadly terror attacks that sparked public fear and boosted support for opposition conservatives.
