Former One Direction singer Liam Payne died after falling from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, according to Reuters.
Argentine police announced on Wednesday that officers were called to the CasaSur hotel in the capital’s Palermo neighborhood after reports of an “aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”
Having achieved worldwide fame as part of one of the best-selling bands of all time, 31-year-old Liam Payne pursued a solo career after “indefinite hiatus” in 2016. In March this year, he released his last single Teardrop.
While many details of the circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear, Payne spoke publicly about his struggles with mental health and alcohol. His death caused a storm of grief among music industry stars and fans, including those who gathered outside the hotel.
One Direction had more than 29 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100, with six in the top 10, including What Makes You Beautiful, Story of My Life and Live While We’re Young. Payne’s co-writing credits included Story of My Life and Night Changes.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Payne’s One Direction and solo career brought him about $70 million.
Last year, he posted a video message to fans on his YouTube channel in which he talked about his family, his new artwork, and performing again after giving up alcohol. He thanked his fans for supporting him through the tough times.
