One killed, 25 injured in high-speed train collision in Germany

A lorry and a train collided near a railway crossing on Reller Street in Hamburg-Renneburg, Germany, killing one person and injuring 25 others, German media reported on Wednesday.

A 55-year-old man died at the scene as a result of the accident. A federal police spokesman said 25 people were injured, six of them moderately and 19 slightly. Among others, the driver of the truck sustained injuries. It is not yet clear if the train driver is among the injured.

The lorry was trying to pass through the railway crossing when the barrier suddenly closed. However, the rear of the lorry was sticking out on the tracks. The train, which was carrying at least 291 passengers, was unable to brake in time.

At the same time, the Hamburg – Harburg – Buchholz railway line was closed and trains will be diverted, causing possible delays of about 15 minutes. A fire brigade of around 80 personnel as well as police officers worked at the scene.
